Mountain City Public Montessori is a tuition-free public Montessori Charter school for children in grades kindergarten through 8th grade in Asheville, North Carolina. Our mission is to provide equitable access to a high-quality, relevant Montessori education to meet the needs of all students and to strengthen our community. Our organizational structure is one of participatory leadership that gives our staff the support they need to provide the best learning environment and experience for the students, and allows each individual to focus their attention, energy, and skills on what they do best. Participatory leadership enables the school to draw on a larger pool of talent, wisdom, expertise, and experience beyond a single administrator, and nurtures the development of leadership experience and skills within the school, thereby cultivating the next generation of leaders.
Purpose
This interim school administrator role will ensure that Mountain City Public Montessori fulfills North Carolina’s public school administrator requirements, including the general facilitation of academic and behavioral support. During this time, the school will reimagine this position within the greater school structure to ultimately transition to updated expectations for the school administrator role.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership
- Serve as the school’s administrator of record (specifically, Testing Coordinator and ELL) with NC DPI in partnership with the school’s Operations and Finance Director
- Supervise, observe, and evaluate licensed staff as required by state law.
- Partner with the Montessori Coach and leadership team to support instructional quality and professional growth.
- Monitor student progress and ensure that academic supports and interventions are effectively implemented.
- Promote consistency between Montessori philosophy and state academic standards.
Compliance & Accountability
- Ensure compliance with NC curriculum, assessment, and accountability requirements.
- Oversee test administration and reporting, collaborating with staff to ensure accuracy.
- Support compliance for exceptional children, English learners, and other student service programs.
- Provide updates to the Board and state agencies on instructional and compliance matters.
Student & Family Engagement
- Address concerns related to student behavior, academic performance, or services.
- Uphold student discipline policies fairly and consistently.
- Support a positive, inclusive school culture and maintain open communication with families.
Collaboration & Communication
- Partner with the Operations and Finance Director on whole-school needs while focusing primarily on instructional leadership.
- Communicate clearly with staff and families about instructional initiatives and academic goals.
- Work closely with the Board, leadership team, and external partners to ensure stability during the transition period.
Qualifications
- Current (or eligible for) NC Administrator License required.
- Demonstrated experience in instructional leadership, teacher supervision, and compliance.
- Strong knowledge of NC accountability, testing, and student services requirements.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with Montessori philosophy (preferred, but not required).
Term
This is a temporary position designed to ensure continuity and compliance until a permanent administrator is appointed.
Compensation
To be determined based on qualifications and contractual commitment. Base salary will be in alignment with our teacher salary schedule.
